KI and Ontario Joint Panel Talks Breakdown

Big Trout Lake, ON – Talks between Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) and Ontario broke off today when Ontario was unable to provide any assurance that mining exploration by God’s Lake Resources (GLR) would stop while the proposed KI-Ontario joint panel meets.

“KI is facing a repeat of the Platinex dispute and Ontario has learned nothing from the Court of Appeals decision,” said Chief Donny Morris.

KI is requesting that Ontario immediately address the real risks to its sacred sites that the GLR project represents.

The Ontario government sent three Assistant Deputy Ministers from the Ministries of Natural Resources, Aboriginal Affairs, and Northern Development and Mines  to discuss the joint panel with KI.  MNDM is asserting that they have no legal capacity to address third party interests which are created by the free entry under the Mining Act.

“Where is the change Premier McGuinty promised when we were released from jail,” asked Chief Morris.
